About the programme

This programme has been designed to provide an introduction to hairdressing and a foundation to build upon with further study. You'll learn about salon culture, hierarchy and terminology so you can communicate appropriately with clients, peers and supervisors. During the introduction to cutting, you'll learn basic cutting technology and techniques.

  • Hairdressing theory and practice
  • Client consultations, including hair and scalp analysis
  • Application of shampoo, conditioner and treatments
  • Removal of colour from clients’ hair and scalp
  • Hair shape, form, texture and direction
  • Performing hair-styling tasks using a range of techniques and styling tools
  • Using and maintaining cutting tools
  • Undertaking a range of colouring and de-colouring services
  • Chemical reformation services
  • Personal hygiene and presentation
  • Health and safety
  • Environmental requirements of a salon

Further study options

The Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) leads onto several other qualifications in this sector, including the Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist) Level 4 and the Certificate in Commercial Barbering at Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Career opportunities

This qualification shows employers that you can perform basic tasks competently within a salon environment and enables you to be employed as a junior or assistant stylist in a hairdressing salon.
