About the programme

Tai Poutini Polytechnic has worked closely with parents, whānau, educators and support services to develop the Training Scheme in Hospitality Supported Learning (Level 1), targeted especially at students who require supported learning. 

You will learn the basics of customer service, presentation and health and safety in a hospitality environment. You will benefit from learning life skills and communication skills to help build confidence and understanding of basic hospitality and community practices. The programme aims to prepare you for an entry-level position in the hospitality industry; it also offers social and life skills and the ability to interact with the local community.

Core elements

On completion of this training scheme you will be able to:

  • Participate in a dining experience in a hospitality context.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic terminology used in the hospitality industry.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate independently in a training environment.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge of personal safety in a hospitality environment.
  • Develop basic skills required for hospitality activities.
  • Select plants and care for plant life that can be used in a hospitality context.

Further study options

Graduates of the Training Scheme in Hospitality Supported Learning (Level 1), could continue on with further education such as the following qualifications;

  • New Zealand Certificate in Skills for Living for Supported Learners (Level 1)
  • New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2)
  • New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3)
  • New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 3) Café Services
  • New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Services (Level 3) Restaurant Services

Career opportunities

Graduates of this programme could be employed as;

  • Hospitality industry staff members in supervised positions
  • Customer service related jobs such as supermarkets, service stations

Programme structure and workload

This programme is delivered part time. Learning is both face to face and self-directed learning.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria: 

  • Applicants must be 16 years of age or older
  • Applicants must have basic reading, writing and numeracy skills
  • Attend an interview with TPP staff

Special notes:

  • Applications outside the above requirements may, in some circumstances, be considered by the department Manager of Teaching and Learning.

When you apply to study with Tai Poutini Polytechnic, you will be enrolled with Te Pūkenga, the national network of vocational and applied education in Aotearoa New Zealand. Enrolling in programmes with Tai Poutini Polytechnic, means that you will graduate with a Te Pūkenga qualification.

You will be offered a place subject to meeting the entry and selection requirements and the availability of places on the programme. The Polytechnic reserves the right to not accept late applications, i.e., after the programme has started. The Polytechnic reserves the right to cancel, prior to commencement, any programme which does not attract a minimum number of students. The fees shown are indicative only.
