Te Pūkenga

Te Pūkenga is reimagining vocational learning – building a new kind of organisation to make learning fit around learners. Te Pūkenga was formed following the Government’s Review of Vocational Education.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic is part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, together with all the other polytechnics in New Zealand.

From 2023, all Tai Poutini Polytechnic learners will be enrolled with Te Pūkenga, instead of Tai Poutini Polytechnic. Right now, our people will continue to support our learners. They will still be enrolled in the same qualification and will continue to learn in the same way, in the same place, with the same people.

Being a part of Te Pūkenga means we will be more connected to the other organisations delivering vocational and applied education in Aotearoa New Zealand and we will work with them to share skills and knowledge to better help you succeed.

We are excited to be part of Te Pūkenga which has been set up as part of the Government’s Reform of Vocational Learning. Te Pūkenga is creating a network of online, on-campus and on-job learning to give learners more flexibility in what, where and how they learn.

You will see more communication about this change over the next few months. We want to reassure you that the learning of our ākonga will remain our priority.

What Te Pūkenga will mean for new students from January 2023

You might be thinking about your next step, such as studying for the first time, upskilling, or retraining. We want to help you navigate that process.

  • Tai Poutini Polytechnic is still your first port of call. We’re here to talk with you about your options.
  • Tai Poutini Polytechnic can also help if you need information about other courses that are available across Aotearoa/New Zealand.
  • Learning and training options on the West Coast will continue to be offered. In fact, there may be more opportunities to learn a wider range of subjects as Te Pūkenga brings together our network of teachers and industry leaders.
  • Te Pūkenga is creating a unified network of polytechnics and industry training organisations to give you the benefit of the strengths of the whole network in our local region.

What Te Pūkenga will mean for existing students from January 2023

We want to help you fit learning around your life.

  • The aim is to make learning on the West Coast more connected with other parts of the country to give you more flexibility in what, where, and how you learn.
  • Your learning and training won’t just take place in a classroom – we’ll guide and support you into real workplaces.

We’ll help you find a way of learning that works best for you.

  • This might be on-job learning, where you’ll learn while you work alongside an employer.
  • It might be online learning, to fit around your other responsibilities, such as work or caring for your whānau.
  • It might be campus-based learning, where you can test new skills and access services to support your journey.
  • Our goal is to help you get more than a qualification. We want to see you build the right skills and knowledge that you’ll need to take the next step in your job or career.
  • Let’s talk about training options on the West Coast and how we can help you take that next step.

Right now, nothing changes.

  • You’ll continue to learn in the same way, at the same place, with the same people.
  • Tai Poutini Polytechnic will continue to support you to achieve your goals. Feel free to reach out to discuss other ways we can help you succeed.
  • Te Pūkenga is creating a unified network of polytechnics and industry training organisations to give you the benefit of the strengths of the whole network in our local region.
  • The aim is to make learning on the West Coast more connected with other parts of the country to give you more flexibility in what, where, and how you learn.

From 1 January 2023, you’ll be enrolled as a learner at Te Pūkenga, instead of Tai Poutini Polytechnic

  • Tai Poutini Polytechnic staff will be here to talk to you and support you as you learn.
  • Tai Poutini Polytechnic will keep you updated about this change as we get closer to this date.
  • You’ll still be enrolled in a nationally recognised qualification, learning locally.
  • There will always be education and training options on the West Coast.
  • In fact, you’ll have access to more study options than ever on the West Coast.
  • Most importantly, Te Pūkenga will ensure you have a positive experience and local support so you can gain the skills you need for the next step in your journey.
