This course provides people in the Building and Construction industries with the ability to assess and select suitable Elevating Platforms and an understanding of legislative requirements.

It will provide the skills and knowledge to work safely and competently in setting up, daily maintenance and operation of various types of elevating work platforms on a construction or industrial site.

Core Elements

Graduates will be able to:



  • Work safely at heights
  • Describe the legislative requirements for Elevating Work Platform (EWP) operation
  • Operate at least two types of EWP

 And at least one of:

  • Operate other types of EWP
  • Demonstrate knowledge of crane operations
  • Use another form of temporary or mobile work platforms
  • Use a range of height safety equipment


Compulsory Unit Standards

  • US 23966 Describe types of elevating work platforms (EWPs), and legislative requirements for their use
  • US 17600 Explain safe working practices at heights
  • US 23229 Use safety harness when working at height


Elective Unit Standards

  • US 23961 Assess the worksite, prepare and operate a truck mounted EWP

  • US 23964 Assess the worksite, prepare and operate a vertical lift EWP
  • US 3788   Demonstrate knowledge of crane types, and safe practices required in the crane industry
  • US 15757  Use, install and disestablish temporary proprietary height safety systems when working at height
  • US 14617  Prevent hazards associated with working at heights on construction sites 
  • US 25043   Lockout and reinstate machinery in the workplace
  • US  25045  Employ height safety equipment in the workplace

Entry Criteria

  • Be 16 years of age or over.
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.

Note: Some courses within this programme require specific levels of physical ability and aptitude for working at heights.
