The weather is warming up, the holidays are getting closer and it’s time to think about getting out and about this summer.

When you’re planning your next adventure, have a think about what’s right here on our doorstep. Let’s face it, tourists come from all around the world to marvel at the majestic West Coast scenery - so if you haven’t made the most of it lately, here are some options for summer.

Moana and Lake Brunner
We could soon be calling Moana the “Queenstown of the West” as more people discover the town nestled on Lake Brunner. With holiday homes popping up everywhere, it’s becoming know as a great place to spend the weekend. You can swim, get out on a boat or walk around the shore. Pack a picnic and enjoy a warm summer’s day out with the family.

The ever-popular pancake rocks and blowholes draw visitors year-round. But when was the last time you walked the track? It’s great fun and the nearby rivers provide super spots for swimming and picnicking. There are also plenty of walking tracks and opportunities for kayaking and rafting.

Top of the Coast
There are some stunning beaches in and around Westport and it’s well worth exploring. The golden sands of Carter’s Beach are a great summer spot and, just up the road, is lovely Tauranga Bay and the fur seal colony. Further north at Karamea and Mokihinui you’ll find secluded beaches and stunning bush walks. You can camp overnight or just head out for the day.

Adrenalin junkies
The Coast now has loads of options for people looking for some excitement in the outdoors. You can find dozens of businesses offering white water rafting, river safaris, jet boat tours, sky diving, helicopter rides and more. All with views of the most stunning landscape you’ll find.

There are also plenty of local events that you can get out an enjoy over the coming month - take a look online, but you might want to think about:

  • Christmas on the Beach, Hokitika, 14 December
  • Merry Little Christmas Market, Greymouth, 21 December
  • Westport Trots, Boxing Day
  • And plenty of New Year’s Eve celebrations all round the region!
