Mechanical Engineering Student 2020
Programme attended: Mechanical Engineering (Level 3)
TPP Engineering Student Jimmy Tisbury says he’s getting hands-on experience and learning new skills that will help him get started as a mechanical engineer.
Jimmy’s been training with TPP for six months and is looking forward to putting the skills he’s learned into practice when the programme is finished.
“I’d just moved back to Westport when I enrolled and I didn’t have a real plan in mind. I wanted to do something that would help me learn as many skills as I could – the more skills you have, the more desirable you are to an employer. “TPP’s Westport engineering course made good sense. I love the hands-on part of the job: learning how to operate the lathe with precision, learning all the different types of weld and techniques. I’m planning to look for a mechanical engineer’s apprenticeship when I’m done and these are all great skills to have.”
Jimmy encouraged people thinking about enrolling to give it a go. “Every job I've had has been different and in my experience it takes you a while to figure out what career path to go down. So, my advice would be to try out as many different jobs as you can, broadening your skillset until you find the job you like.”
