Construction certification speeds builder’s qualification

Austen De Ath Green’s path to becoming a fully qualified builder is nearly complete, having completed a year of study at Tai Poutini Polytechnic and an apprenticeship through Construction West Coast.

Austen believes that his decision to study for a year has enabled him to complete his builder’s certification at lightning speed.

“I did the Certificate in Carpentry and Construction, and I quickly got a job through the company I’d done my work experience placements at,” he says.

“Having done the Certificate, the paperwork components of my apprenticeship were already taken care of.  Other than my daily logbook, I didn’t have to do any paperwork in the evenings as apprentices often do, which really took the pressure off.”

Austen believes this made his path through his apprenticeship quicker and more seamless than those of his apprentice colleagues, and says that he’s looking forward to becoming a fully qualified builder.

“I feel like doing my study has really set me up for the future.  I really enjoy the woodwork side of things, and the satisfaction of getting the job done.”

Austen is still working for Construction West Coast, contracted to build new homes for GJ Gardiner Builders on the West Coast.

“In the last year particularly, I’ve really gained confidence with my work, knowing what to do and how to do it.  I reckon this is a great career for people who like good, honest, hands on work.  I’d recommend it 100%.”
