Outdoor Instructing and Guiding Graduate
Course Attended: NZ Diploma in Outdoor Adventure Education
Jessica Bailey says studying Outdoor Education at Tai Poutini Polytechnic helped her land her dream job as a sea kayak guide off Antarctica.
Jessica’s upbringing meant lots of time spent in the outdoors and she kayaked competitively as a teenager.
“I decided I wanted to make a career out of it, so I signed up for TPP’s Outdoor Education programme as it has a really good reputation.
“It was awesome – it was probably the best two years of my life. You’re around other people that like the same things and they challenge you to get out and get amongst it.
“TPP honestly has some of the best tutors in New Zealand. The skills I learned helped me push myself to achieve more – it’s not just about the outdoor activities: you learn leadership skills that help set you up for a better career.”
Since graduating Jessica has guided for three seasons and taken on her own adventures. She’s also taken the next step with her training and is studying Environmental Management. Right now, she is looking forward to starting her dream job as a sea kayak guide off Antarctica.
“The opportunities opened for me by TPP helped me get the job. I’m definitely nervous – it’s an extreme environment – but I’m really excited as well.”
