Tourism and Hospitality Graduate
Programme attended: Food and Beverage Service for Cafes and Restaurants (Level 3)
Campbell Smith says the skills he first learned through Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s tourism and hospitality training have set him up for a career he can take around the world.
“I wanted to work in a bar or restaurant so I signed-up with TPP. The training was great – it was very practical so you’re actually learning what it will really be like to do the job.”
Campbell says he enjoyed developing his barista skills and studying liquor licensing laws has set him up for a better career. Immediately after graduating, he was offered a job in Franz Josef and now works across three local establishments – a café, restaurant and bar.
“We work across all three so there’s always something different to do. I’m head bar-tender now and I really like the work.
“The training helped me get started in my career and I’m keen to stay here for a while and learn more about the business. One day I’ll take my skills and do some travelling – what you learn you can take with you wherever you go.”
Campbell says he’d encourage others to have a go at study, learn a trade and give their career a chance to take off.
