“If you don’t take the leap, you won’t get anywhere,” – that’s what Tai Poutini Polytechnic graduate Blake Gray says to anyone thinking about enrolling to study.
Blake completed TPP’s cookery programme in 2018 and is now working at a winery restaurant in Marlborough.
“I was always interested in food and I decided to sign-up for the TPP course when I finished school. The training was interesting, the tutors definitely knew what they were talking about and they teach you what you need to know.
“You learn a bit about all the areas of cooking which sets you up for starting off as a chef and gives you better career prospects.”
Blake was offered a job within the first day of his work experience at the winery. He returned after graduating and has been there ever since.
“It’s going really well, I’ve run the shift a few times and I’m keen to stay here and learn more. Eventually I’d like to travel and there are opportunities to work on private boats which I’m really interested in.”
Blake says he wouldn’t have got as far without starting his training at TPP. “It got me a trade and I can take that anywhere. You’ve got to just give it a go and see where it takes you.”
