Locally trained chef takes on the world
Chef Alex Ensor completed his chef training at Tai Poutini Polytechnic back in the 1990s, and says that what he learned here sparked his passion for a culinary career.
“The basic cooking skills I was taught at Tai Poutini helped set up my career. It was the perfect start for me and I still apply the knowledge that I learnt during even the most sophisticated of dining preparations,” he says.
Alex recalls that his Tai Poutini tutor was a big influence in his career.
“My tutor recognised my dedication to rugby and hunting, and motivated me to apply that focus towards cooking. He taught me all I needed to start my career and secure a professional position in a serious industry, and I am forever grateful for that.”
Since graduating in 1995, Alex has worked in renowned award-winning restaurants around the world, and is currently the executive chef at Juniper restaurant in Oman, an opportunity he is relishing.
“Working here in Oman, it’s an amazing challenge and I am enjoying using the fresh local produce when creating the menus, while maintaining the high standard of cuisine that we have become famous for,” he commented.
Under Alex’s management, Juniper has picked up several awards, including most recently, the BBC Good Food Awards ‘Restaurant of the Year’ award for Oman.
