Jade and Hard Stone Carving Tutor
Tai Poutini Polytechnic prepares carving students for success by helping them create a career from their art, says Jade and Hard Stone Carving Tutor Sheree Warren.
Sheree runs TPP’s popular carving programmes, offering a training experience for budding carvers that creates better opportunities for them and is unique in New Zealand.
“We offer national qualifications so our graduates can go on to further study or get started in their career. We know our students want careers where they can express their art, so we help them learn how to do that.”
Graduates of TPP’s Jade and Hard Stone Carving Certificate and Diploma programmes often start their own carving businesses or work with larger carving operations on the West Coast.
“My passion is to teach my students the skills they need to make it in our industry. At the same time, by building their knowledge and developing close ties with local industry, we help create a stronger industry that promotes the value of quality, authentic work.
“We live and work in a unique environment, on the South Island’s West Coast. Learning the history and cultural significance of the material we work with is just as important as the design, carving and problem-solving skills we teach. We’re preparing students to be their own artist within the industry.”
