Art and Design Graduate
Programme attended: Hard Stone and Jade Carving (Level 3)
Just one year after graduating, Josey Coyle is living a creative life and is about to achieve her dream of exhibiting her work at her favourite jewellery gallery.
Josey completed her Diploma in Jade and Hard Stone Carving in 2017 and has since been working with a local carver in Hokitika. She says studying at TPP has created better opportunities for her and helped her get started in a career she loves.
“After studying Fine Arts I began working in an Auckland art gallery and felt envious of the artists who were creating things.”
Josey, an admirer of beautiful things with a love of jewellery, found out about TPP’s jade programme and decided to create her own opportunity by making the big move south.
“I always wanted to be a maker and to work with my hands. The move to Greymouth was exciting; it was a big change but I love the way of life here.
“The training was great. I learned the skills and techniques of carving, but I also got to be a part of a like-minded community. The tutor helped me to push myself, get out of my comfort zone and learn how to present my work to the public. I put my heart into my work and I still get incredibly nervous every time I show a new piece, it doesn’t get any easier!”
Josey put her talent and new-found self-promotion skills to the test when visiting Auckland last Christmas – with exciting results. “There’s a gallery that I’ve always dreamed of being included in, so I got in contact and showed them some of my work and now I will be a part of their emerging artist exhibition.
“It’s a really exciting time, I aim to push my work out into the world, create a name for myself and hopefully be involved in more exhibitions. Training at TPP helped me create a better future and I’m looking forward to it.”
