West Coast Training and Employment Roadshow is coming to your town

West Coasters can find out about training and employment options across the region during an agency roadshow in July and August.

TPP, along with representatives from the Ministry of Social Development, Development West Coast, Department of Conservation, and the civil construction and primary industries, are holding the roadshow at schools and community centres around the region. Students, businesses, employers and job seekers will be able to listen to and talk with all of these training and employment agencies at the one time, with information available about job opportunities and the skills needed to fill employment gaps in the region.

Stakeholder information sessions will start with Greymouth on Tuesday 21 July at TPP’s Greymouth Campus, starting at 5.30pm. Members of the public, students, businesses, community groups and others are welcome to attend.

  • The stakeholder sessions will include:
  • An overview of new training options available
  • Details of what’s included in free training options under the Government’s Trades and Apprenticeships Training Package
  • How TPP can work with local businesses to offer new training opportunities
  • TPP’s new ways of working as part of the NZ Institute of Skills and Technology – and what this means for access to more training options on the West Coast.
  • Speakers from Coast Connect, DWC and MSD on opportunities and support for our region.
  • Opportunities to speak with TPP, DWC and MSD staff about individual and business needs post-lockdown and talk about options for support.

TPP Leader – Engagement Mequa Hourston says “We wanted to reach out as far as we could across the region this year, to meet with people and hear how they have been impacted by the pandemic. As well as holding events at schools and community centres in the larger towns, we’ll be visiting smaller centres such as Reefton, Karamea, and Franz Josef.

“It’s fantastic to have MSD, DOC, DWC and industry join us this year. We’re all working together to support our region post-lockdown and we want to hear what’s happening so we can offer support and options for the future.”

The intention is to visit schools during the day, then hold community sessions in the evening to allow as many people as possible to attend. In Karamea and Hari Hari the roadshow will combine the community session with the school session.

“We’ve all had to adjust to a new work and economic landscape since the lockdown ended. This brings with it both challenges and opportunities for the West Coast. Now that TPP is part of the NZIST, we can access more training opportunities and bring programmes to the West Coast that meet local needs.

“At TPP we see ourselves as more than a polytechnic – we’re one of the largest organisations on the West Coast and we have a wider role to play in supporting local events, working alongside local businesses and getting behind local initiatives. We’re looking forward to talking about opportunities with our community and we encourage people to come along to the Information Night to find out more.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the TPP Stakeholder Information Sessions held in July and August, whether you’re thinking about personal study options, you’re a business owner or employer with changing skills needs, or a community group that wants to find out more.
