Tai Poutini Polytechnic cookery students offered a special “thank-you” of slices, muffins and biscuits to Greymouth supermarket workers this week.

The students wanted to recognise the fact that supermarket workers were on-the-job, keeping locals fed and watered during the COVID-19 lockdown. They decided to bake some special treats for the workers as a thank-you from everyone.

Cookery Tutor Evelyne Baumgartner says it was the students’ own idea once they were able to get back into the Polytechnic kitchen as Alert Levels decreased.

“Our NZ Certificate in Cookery is teaching students all aspect of chef training, cookery and food-related learning. As well as the technical skills they are learning, it’s fantastic to see them using their new skills to support their community and offer something special to people who really deserve a treat.”

The students delivered their baking to New World and Countdown Greymouth staff on Wednesday 3 June with the message: “An appreciation coming from all walks of life for the extra mile you all went for the people of Greymouth and surroundings”.
