Techweek is for everyone – find an event that suits you!

Whatever your age or technical ability, there’s a local event that will appeal to you at Techweek 2021.

West Coast community groups, businesses and individuals are getting behind Techweek – a nationwide series of events that celebrates New Zealand innovation. Tai Poutini Polytechnic supports the annual initiative by coordinating regional activities, providing space for events and promoting what’s on.

You can choose from around a dozen local events, covering a wide range of topics and for all ages. Older tech‐users are signing‐up for events that help demystify their smartphones in both Westport and Greymouth, while the Grey District Youth Trust is launching a new youth‐focused podcast and asking young West Coasters for ideas.

Grey District Council Manager Library and Museum Services Liz Burke says the “Intro to using Smartphones” event on Saturday 22 May will be popular with people keen to learn more about their devices.

“This is an event for everyone, but it particularly appeals to older people who may be new to smartphones or have just updated to a new model and would appreciate a bit of a helping hand. It’s a practical session with support that aims to make it easier for everyone to access the digital world.”

A similar event “Smartphone Appy Hour” being held in Westport on Tuesday 25 May is run as a dropin where you can bring your phone along, learn about various apps and ask questions.

The following Saturday, 29 May, is the time for young people around the district to come along to the launch of the Grey District Youth Trust Podcast Collaboration. Co‐organiser Katrina Brown says the podcast will be a place for young people to share stories and news that appeals to them.

“Techweek is the perfect platform to launch the new initiative, asking young people to come along and share their ideas about what the podcast might include or just listen and learn more.”

Polytechnic Leader – Engagement Mequa Hourston says most of the events are free and are targeted at our local region.

“Whether you want to learn about vlogging, get some tips for setting up your own website, cover computer basics or take part in a digital clinic, you’ll find it on the West Coast during Techweek. You can also take part in some of the virtual events being held around the country.

“It’s a great opportunity for Coasters to get together and learn from each other, whether you’re a techpro or just learning. We’re pleased to be able to help make the events happen here on the West Coast.”

The majority of events are free and all you need to do is register. Come join us for Techweek 2021. To find out more visit – search for the events listed here or others to find out more.
