Student carvers put creations under the spotlight
One-off jewellery pieces, intricate carvings and striking sculpture – students will once again present their year’s work to the community at the annual Jade and Hard Stone Carving Exhibition in November and December.
The student exhibition is open to the public at the Left Bank Art Gallery in Greymouth for two weeks from 18 November to 2 December. Students will showcase their work from the past year, including carved jewellery and sculpture. As usual, visitors will be able to take one-off pieces of art home with them as the work will be on sale.
Tutors Sheree Warren and James Washer say it’s been another busy year for students who are looking forward to putting their work on display for the public to share.
“We’re excited to present the year’s work to the community and I know visitors will enjoy the breadth and extent of skill and talent that’s gone into this year’s programme. The students have learned to master their practical skills and develop their creative and artistic abilities to plan and execute some fantastic pieces.”
Held at the end of every year, the exhibition is an opportunity for students to showcase their efforts over the year and gain experience presenting and selling pieces in a real world environment. The exhibition is a key aspect of the year’s training, where students learn the carving process alongside what it takes to work in the industry, present their artwork and liaise with galleries and potential buyers.
Alongside preparing for the exhibition, students have also collaborated on a large limestone sculpture, testing their teamwork as well as their artistic and carving skills. The sculpture, a contemporary design inspired by Tai Poutini and the four elements of nature, wind/air, water, earth, fire, will be gifted to Whare Manaaki o te Tai Poutini community group this year.
West Coasters can also get a taste for carving with Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s special short course over Westland Anniversary weekend (26 and 27 November 2022). Come along and learn the basics of carving to ignite your passion! See Jade Carving Course » Tai Poutini Polytechnic (tpp.ac.nz)
