Life Hack West Coast

29 Mar 2014

Life Hack 2014 On the last weekend of March this year an event took place called ‘Life Hack’ which was held at TPP’s Campbell Building.  Life Hack is all about empowering youth and the wider community by helping them to produce tangible solutions to problems/gaps in the local community.  This year the West Coast was chosen as a region for Life Hack and some amazing projects sprung to life from the weekend including a plan to create a youth radio and recording studio based in Greymouth.  TPP is proud to sponsor such uplifting events that better our communities. A Champion Start

12 Mar 2014

World champions Amy Tipling and Kim Dodd – members of the under-23 R6 women’s team that blitzed the field at the recent World Rafting Championships in Rotorua – learned to love the thrill of whitewater rafting at TPP. They were both working in Canada when the call came to join the team. With six in the raft and one reserve, the hand picked group trained hard in the weeks before the championship. They competed in four events: time trial, head to head, slalom and down river. ‘We had no idea how we would go, but were strong right off the mark, worked well together and gave it our all. We had an ideal combination of powerful paddlers, good technical skills and river knowledge,’ says Amy. They describe taking part in the world championships as thrilling and winning as wonderful. Amy and Kim met as students on the Diploma in Outdoor Instruction and Guiding programme and bonded over their shared passion for rafting and kayaking. Since completing the diploma, they’ve honed their skills as professional rafting guides, working back-to-back seasons in New Zealand and overseas. ‘It can be hard to find work in outdoor education or adventure tourism without some sort of qualification,’ says Kim. ‘The diploma teaches a...

TPP Enrolments Up

20 Feb 2014

TPP Enrolments Up   It’s all go at Tai Poutini Polytechnic with the new intake of 2014 students starting last week. Over 150  students descended  on Greymouth  campus  for  a  Powhiri  and  BBQ  lunch  in  the  Atrium  on Monday  10  February.  Further orientation  events  and  activities  will continue  to  familiarise  new students with the strong TPP community.   The  atmosphere around campus is positive as West Coast enrolment  numbers are up when compared to this time last year – with noticeable increases in several programmes.  The Certificate in Automotive Trades has had their highest number of enrolments in seven years. The programme  involves a  good  mix  of theory  and  practical  and  in  turn  prepares  students  for  an apprenticeship   in the  automotive  industry. Head  of  Department,  Warren Smith,  says  “It’s  a reflection  on the great job our tutors are doing, and the support we receive from the automotive industry who take our students on at the conclusion of the programme”. TPP’s  ever  popular  Outdoor  Education  programmes  have  also  drawn  in their  highest  number  of enrolments in five years. The West Coast offers the perfect setting for these students and this year they have hit the ground running, literally, running the Point Elizabeth walkway, testing their fitness levels. The  Outdoor...
