The programme is designed to provide learning experiences that enable students to develop the core knowledge, skills and personal attributes sought by employers and required for entry-level positions in music and entertainment industries.  This programme focuses on developing musicianship, recording and live sound skills and provides a pathway for further study.

The Foundation Sound and Music Programme of Study addresses the recognised need for foundation and bridging programmes for learners with either; existing music and/or audio knowledge and skills but low educational achievement, or interested and educationally capable learners but undeveloped music knowledge or skills. 

The Foundation Sound and Music programme will produce graduates who are able to:

  • Participate as developing musicians, with basic skills in recording and live sound.
  • Engage in higher level pathways through to entry level audio engineering, music performance, live sound and event management.
  • Manage own learning and work effectively in within teams and in the community.
  • Gain a NZ qualification relevant to their level of knowledge, skills, literacy and numeracy.

Entry Criteria

  • For applicants where English is a second language, applicants must meet General or Academic IELTS Level 5.5 or above, or NZQA-approved equivalent
  • Limited places available for applicants who already hold a level 1 or level 2 qualification.
  • Applicants to Level 2 must have level 1 Literacy or equivalent
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age

Foundation Education

People aged under 25 years old are entitled to free education when they enrol on any Level 1 or Level 2 foundation programme. The aim is to ensure that all young people gain the core foundational skills required for success in life and for higher level vocational study, training and employment. Key components of these programmes will include literacy and numeracy development, developing skills to pathway into industry, and the completion of Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications.
